About WHOIS
What is a WHOIS lookup?
Every domain name is registered with the registry of its extension, such as Verisign for .com or SIDN for .nl. A WHOIS lookup asks that registry who registered a domain, through which registrar, and since and until when.
Today most registries answer through RDAP, the modern successor of WHOIS. WhoisCheckr asks the registry directly, so you get the official answer rather than a copy from a third party.
Why WhoisCheckr
Straight from the source
- Official registry data for every extension, never scraped
- Dozens of extensions checked in parallel, in seconds
- Your searches are not sold to registrars or domain resellers
- Free, without an account and without advertising
How do I check if a domain name is available?
Type the name you want, with or without an extension, in the search box. Without an extension WhoisCheckr checks the name on all popular extensions at once. With an extension, such as example.com, you get the full details for that exact domain.
How can I see who owns a domain?
Search for the exact domain. The WHOIS page shows the registrar that manages it, when it was registered and when it expires. If the registry publishes the owner, the organisation and country are shown as well. Most registries hide private owners for privacy reasons; you can then reach the owner through the registrar.
Where does the information come from?
Straight from the registry of each extension, through RDAP: the official successor of WHOIS. For the few extensions without RDAP, WhoisCheckr falls back to the classic WHOIS service of the registry. No data is scraped from third-party sites.
What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
Both answer the question who registered a domain. WHOIS is the old text-based protocol; RDAP is its modern replacement with structured data, fixed field names and better privacy controls. Most registries now offer RDAP.
A domain is taken. Can I still get it?
Sometimes. Check the expiry date and status on the WHOIS page. A domain in its redemption period or pending delete may become free soon. You can also contact the owner through the registrar, or pick another extension that is still available.
